The Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS)

CPCS training courses are all about the skills and abilities of plant operators, and that includes new hiring candidates or people who have yet to take on a full role in the field.

Using a mix of testing methods, CPCS tests are about proving that you are a competent operator that is skilled and aware enough to do their job effectively.

A mixture of theory and practical tests, a standard CPCS course is meant to show that an operator has taken in all of the right knowledge and skills to function properly in a real workplace.

What are Construction Plant Competence and CPCS Training Courses?

The CPCS course is meant to provide proof of proper construction plant training, health and safety awareness, and other pieces so further information and knowledge that a competent operator needs to display.

The CPCS courses themselves are a one-to-one theory exam, then a practical exam. This mixture of theory and practical will weed out any operators who could be a risk or danger in the workplace, while candidates who are a competent operator in both sides of their work will pass.

What Do CPCS Tests Cover?

As mentioned above, CPCS courses are meant as a way to prove that you're ready for the job you're being given, and that you understand how to tackle the challenges and risks you will be facing on-site. When you complete the courses, you show that you're t

This falls into three general categories:

Professional Competence

Professional competence is the theory and practical knowledge of your responsibilities in the workplace, as well as the training you received. In general, the CPCS course is meant to show that an operator understands what they're doing, why they're doing it, and their responsibilities if something goes wrong.

This could include things like planning lifting operations, sourcing lifting equipment, identifying the best candidates for specific roles, performing transport and lifting operations safely, and understanding the technical aspects of a tool you use on-site.

On-Site Practical Experience

A competent operator also needs to have the skills and experience to do their job well. This means building practical skills while on-site, or in simulated version of a real plant, and then putting that knowledge to practical use in a real workplace.

This could include things like serving as a vehicle marshall or slinger signaller, understanding the steps involved in a safety test and inspection, operating comfortably in the plant, understanding different plant safety requirements and tackling day-to-day problems within the site.

Health and Safety Awareness

The CPCS training course also focuses on health and safety test options. Candidates have to know how to react in emergencies, keep construction sites safe, do their job with minimal risk, and conduct their work in the safest manner possible.

This could include things like offering health and safety guidance to others, employing proper health and safety measures, doing health and safety checks before you begin work on the site, inspecting equipment and overseeing safety during lifting operations.

What Happens When You Pass CPCS Courses?

Since CPCS courses are a way to prove your skill, completion of the course rewards you with physical proof in the form of a CPCS card. This CPCS card is a skills card that shows that you completed your training along with the date of when you earned the CPCS card.

Red cards are the most basic marker of your training course completion, and are valid for two years. Blue cards are valid for five years, and mark a fully-competent operator who has completed a range of training course materials, but also takes more time and effort to earn.

Passing both the CPCS theory training and CPCS practical training allows candidates to earn this CPCS card and move on to further courses, including other potential CPCS courses if needed

CPCS Training Courses Available

We can provide a range of CPCS training courses for different plant roles, with each CPCS course offering something new. Like all CPCS course options, the end result will be CPCS course card, but the specifics of each training course will vary based on your role.

The CPCS course options we can offer include (but are not limited to):

  • Excavator CPCS operation training.

  • Forward Dumpster CPCS course training.

  • Dump Truck CPCS operation course training.

  • Roller CPCS operation training.

  • Telehandler CPCS course training.

  • Slinger/Signaller CPCS training.

  • Crane Operator CPCS training.

  • Crane Supervisor CPCS management training.

  • Appointed Person CPCS training.

  • Hoist CPCS operation training.

Every one of these CPCS courses is slightly different, since it focuses on a different role's CPCS requirements. A slinger/signaller will require different specifics than an excavator operator, even if the basic CPCS health and safety test is mostly the same.

Be sure to choose the course that suits you. If you're moving into a slinger/signaller role, choose a CPCS plant slinger/signaller course, rather than a telehandler operator course. In this example, a slinger/signaller course would be designed with that role in mind.

Summary

Passing a CPCS plant course can be a major milestone in your early career. Even the health and safety aspect alone can be a major advantage when looking to get hired. If you're taking on any kind of plant role, then a CPCS course can be just as important as health and safety training.

We can provide a huge range of CPCS test options for the lowest price possible, aiming to help new candidates get a head-start with their competence, health and safety training.

Whether you need a specific CPCS plant course for a certain role or are just interested in the CPCS courses we can offer, we have plenty of options to choose from.
